Supporting a green and just transition for NHS Scotland

Design Challenge 2 News

We’re delighted to announce Rachael Livingstone as the winner of our Design Challenge 2.

Rachael’s powerful proposal, ‘Cutting Emissions, Not Connections’, reimagines the adaptive reuse of vacant buildings into low-carbon, community-led health hubs for refugees displaced by climate change and conflict.

Co-designed with displaced communities, her project combines circular design, preventative healthcare, and social equity to reduce carbon emissions and deliver decentralised, dignified care whilst alleviating pressure on the NHS.

Preparing to begin her fourth year of study at the University of Dundee, Rachael brings a strong commitment to creating architecture that is equitable, sustainable, and socially transformative. Her work connects research-driven thinking with real-world impact, informed by involvement in the Architects Climate Action Network, Future Architects Front, and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.

Congratulations to Rachael and a big thank you to everyone who submitted work into the competition!

A collaborative project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, as part of the Future Observatory programme, and led by the University of Strathclyde and University of Dundee (DJCAD), with Heriot-Watt University, Abertay University, and the University of Edinburgh, NHS Scotland, industry partners, and public sector stakeholders.
