Scottish Parliament Highlights Design HOPES’ Work on Greener Hospitals

A new Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICe) briefing, Links between Climate Change and Health in Scotland  outlines how climate change is already affecting health across Scotland. The report examines risks such as extreme weather, rising temperatures, and threats to food, water, and healthcare services, while also noting how healthcare itself contributes to climate change.

It highlights examples of practical solutions being implemented in Scotland. One example is Design HOPES’ work to make hospitals greener, including projects such as the Green Ward Toolkit, which measures the environmental impact of hospital wards, and initiatives to reduce single-use plastics. Other efforts include digitising hospital stock-taking and improving travel and equipment systems within NHS Scotland.

The report emphasises that action on climate change can have direct benefits for public health, reduce pressure on health and social care systems, and support more resilient communities. By showcasing initiatives like Design HOPES alongside broader strategies across NHS Scotland, the briefing illustrates both the scale of the challenge and the opportunities for positive change.
