The aim of this project is to help primary healthcare practitioners better consider housing as a social and environmental determinant of health in their everyday practice.
About the Project
Housing is well established as a social determinant of health contributing to or even causing respiratory, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and mental health conditions. Some guidance has been produced by various health authorities (e.g. NICE, England/OHID/UKHSA, UK Parliament, Department for Levelling Up), there remain challenges in considering and acting upon this in healthcare practice.
Building on a survey with over 60 participants in GP surgeries in Scotland as well as policy and literature reviews, workshops and exhibitions, the project has co-designed a toolkit to support primary healthcare practitioners. The connecting home, health and healthcare toolkit consists of a portfolio of diagnostic parts designed to support both patients and GPs within a patient’s journey including a lexicon, a 3D giveaway pamphlet, waiting room information posters and info access points.
The trial of the toolkit is ongoing with results expected in spring 2027.
